Chicken

Ya... I chickened out.  Or maybe just woke up.  Either way, it is a bit depressing.

I woke up yesterday, the day of my interview at Walmart, and realized there was no way I was going to drive through the snow, guaranteed at least some of the time in the dark, to work with people during a pandemic, for a wage that would barely pay for the gas it would take to get there.

This is what our front line workers do.

Very few of them get what they call a 'living' wage.  They are out there, masks on, dealing with people who are also 'over' this pandemic.  There was another case in Revelstoke or somewhere nearby, where a lady lost her sh't about wearing a mask.  And, she lost it on people who had got up that morning and gone to work in the dark, for just enough to get by.  At least I hope those people were getting by.. it is as expensive as heck to live in this country.  I am so grateful that I am able to not work if I so choose, as long as I don't do a lot.. but then again, there is not a lot to do right now.

We can't have friends over for coffee.. no museums, no movies.  We can still eat out, as long as we are doing so with our 'household'.  My 'household' consists of.. well.. me.

But.. we can hang out in Walmart.  We can all go through those doors, masks on, hands clean, say hello to the greeter and wander the aisles.

It seems crazy, but it just is what it is.  It is a great place to meet your family.

Waking up in the dark, seeing the snow coming down and melting, just enough to make the roads a little icy, I think I realized that it would probably not be a whole lot of fun driving in this a few times a week and contracting Covid-19,  and although I would have plenty of company in the hospital, getting a job at Walmart, just to be around more people, was yet another of my silly ideas.

So, I messaged them yesterday that I wasn't going in for the interview.  I am one of the lucky ones. I don't have to take a job at Walmart.

Besides, I have found a better job.

It pays nothing, but, the people are guaranteed to be much friendlier and my being there will be much more appreciated.  Just a note, if anyone does get out of hand, Dan gave us lessons in how to use pepper spray and a couple cans of that shit are situated strategically in the little shop.  RnDz bees, that is Dan and Rea, are, as of today, open for business in the barn below their house.  The hours are when the sign is out.  It isn't snowing this morning and so, I am hanging out in Silver Creek, selling Christmasy jars of honey and offering a couple of my books for sale.  I may even have some home made Christmas cards if you ask nice.

Ya.. I chickened out of Walmart.. but I figure that was probably the smart thing to do.
